Happy New Year to all!
The 2017 season is now over, and the postseason beckons. So what happened? Some of this may surprise you. Some of it may even shock you. Some of it will surely disgust you. Does anybody recall shots of packed stands?
Stats of the week: The Rams scored the most points with 478. Minny allowed the fewest points with 252. New England and Philly finished tied for best point diffy with remarkably similar totals... for Phil...Read Full Post »

And it all comes down to this. Where will I get my faux racial moralizing now? Games are divided into 3 categories depending on level of significance (or one model of it).
Means Something to Both Teams
[email protected]: The Panthers are playing for a shot at the division. The Falcons are playing for their butts. Carolina continues to luck out wins while whiffing on style points. Atlanta gets highlights as usual and loses. The law of av...Read Full Post »

Where else do you get incisive analysis about what really matters? You know, the stuff nobody else is even thinking about. We're inundated with news about January. What about the guys whose tickets to Acapulco are punched?
We know 12 teams will get to the postseason. We don't know exactly whom yet. With one week to go we have as good an opportunity as ever to analyze the refuse, knowing all the while a few entries will make the playoffs. But if you're in a dogfig...Read Full Post »

On this wintery Christmas Eve a lot of whitewashes turned out as anything but, big underdogs putting up real battles. The playoff picture solidified but at least the final week won't be meaningless. The expression "line of gain" was heard again. I never ever heard that before this season. NFL Newspeak?
NE 37 BUF 16: But for an overturned TD that's been drawing faux angst just before the half, Buffalo might have had a 17-13 lead. As it happened the 4 p...Read Full Post »

We've reached the point of no more TNF classiques. Now we have Saturday doubleheaders, no SNF and a DH on Monday, the format perhaps influenced by the arrival of Christmas. Most of the games have some meaning, likely transient in many cases. Several teams could get a lump of coal. Let's see.
[email protected]: The Colts have sooo packed it in that it's hard to see them putting up much of a showing in their old city. If the Ravens are at all real they'll win thi...Read Full Post »

How many good-to-great QBs did we see this week throw stupid picks under pressure? I didn't see every game but I can think of several offhand: Brady, Ben, Brees, Rivers, Rodgers to name a few. Some affected the outcome; some didn't. How many truly bad calls did we see possibly turn a game? Probably a dozen but I can think of a couple... Carolina's TD with the receiver's butt half in and half out of the end zone is one, Steratore's index-card act on a measurement (that actually pro...Read Full Post »

Ok, both teams came into the game at 7-6. But being a fight for first place it still qualifies as one of the week's big games and that deserves a writeup.
KC 30 LAC 13: It appears a mirage dissipated tonight, and it wasn't the one most expected. The hot Chargers mistaked themselves into a hole and then disintegrated before our eyes. The antibodies may have finally worked their magic on the chronic slide of Andy and Alex, since each outdid his counterpart by a wid...Read Full Post »

I feel a quickie coming on. It's early but that makes it easier. On to week 15!
[email protected]: At last, a true TNF classic. Denver finally seems too embarrassed to lose.
[email protected]: The Lions need it. The Bears don't. Stafford's hurt and that means he's got his cape on.
[email protected]: Overbowl of the AFCW. KC has the better team. Chargers are just better.
[email protected]: Miami should win in a walk. Accuweather and JPTP s...Read Full Post »

Shocking that NE lost in Miami? Not really; they were 7-8 there with Brady already.
Shocking that the whole team (or what there was of it) looked so bad for so long? Somewhat.
Shocking that despite NE's putrid performance the game somehow came down to an onside kick? Now THAT was shocking.
And the grand finale... that onside kick. That's two of the strangest anticlimaxes in a row ever seen. First the Ravens and everybody ...Read Full Post »

Of course the big story of the weekend so far is the possible disappearance of Carson Wentz from the NFL landscape for the year. At some point "athletic" and "mobile" are going to become red flags for QBs. How many this year so far? Watson, Rodgers, Tannehill, Luck (carryover), Winston (now back), Taylor (now out), Mariota (maaaybe?)... and now, it appears, Wentz. To be sure some "immobile" QBs have gone poof too (Palmer, McCown e.g.) but the wisdom that an athlethic QB has one mo...Read Full Post »
