well, the east and north have been pretty simple to call for years now. the afc south and west? not so much.
the colts owned the south for a long time, but they have squandered andrew luck. weak defense and lack of depth wipes the colts out each time luck gets injured, and thats happening regularly now. so this division is wide open.
colts: went for defense in fa and the draft. that isnt likely to help protect luck, who has a league high 156 sacks and 578 qb hits to thank for his concussion, lacerated kidney, and torn labrum.tolzien and morris are his backups. gore and turbin are more than adequate rbs, so this team has oline issues. kamir akin ty hilton and dorsett make a decent recieving corps. they will miss te duane allen. as a team it looks like the new gm has attempted to bolster the oline and the defense. its just what they need. if both units improve and luck's shoulder stays good, they could be a playoff team. i doubt it will all fall into place that well in this volatile division.
houston: tom savage is thestarting qb. wheeden is his backup. in other words they wont be going bowl this year. tough defense, and lamar miller with some genuine hunger might get them to the playoffs, but i doubt it.
tennessee: in other words this division is open for the taking. te titans seem to be poised. mariota is as advertised but season ending injuries 2 years in a row tend to end your season.. he is supposed to be healed, but his broken leg better not affect his mobility or he will regress terribly. matt cassel is the back up, so it could be worse. the team is loaded at rb with dmarco murray, and hizmun winner derrick henry chomping at the bit. and run they will. rashad mathews and tajae sharpe will need to step up and it looks like they should, with capable delanie walker at te. the oline is solid. on defense, it will be all about a brand new secondary. dline is solid as r the linebackers. titans r in the tough out category and will contend for the division.
and then there is jaxonville. tom caughlin is tightening the reins. he will keep marone on as coach, and the focus is on getting a running game going. they have been last in rushing for5 yrs. enter leonard fournette.4th overall. he will be running into stacked boxes behind a weary oline, so we know his chances of being zeke elliot are lo. chris ivory and tj yeldon are capable. the jags brought in 2 fbs,so u know caughlin is going to put a clamp on bortles.
bortles looked good in 2015 but not since. tough to do with no running game. they r commited to him for now. chad henne is the veteran back up. imo, they r well supplied at wr with hurns robinson and lee. fournette's threat will help the jag passing o for sure. on defense, the jags have an excellent secondary. maybe the best in the afc.. kalil mack and malik jackson....this is a team with potential.
hard to rank them isnt it. i'm going out on a limb, and once again call for jax to step up. if fournette is as advertised, bortles has proven that he can work with hurns robinson and lee. the secondary can handle the colts, and tom savage in houston. that leaves then up against a similar looking titans team. jax, tennessee, houston, indy. some deserving team isnt going to get in the playoffs from this division.
