could this be the year? NFC edition

Posted by the immortal scurds on August 16, 2011 at 9:35 PM

-that the eagles win the superbowl?   yes it certainly could be.  gamebreaking talent in deshawn jackson, mickey vick, brent celek and ronnie brown head up an offense brimming with options. add asomugha and some solid coaching, throw in a declining division and the eagles have got to be seen as a serious threat.

-that the NFC north gets acclaimed as the best division in football?    In my humble opinion there is no question that yes it will be.   this division boasts the superbowl champion packers, a vikings team sans childress that is surely just a few screen passes away from making mcnabb young again, a detroit lion team that reminds folks of the fearsome foursome, the steel curtain, and the purple people eaters, and has a young man named stafford that DOES possess all the skills needed, and then there are the bears.  martz has the bear offense looking ramlie, and the bear defense just might be healthy this year.

-that the atlanta falcons take the next step?   i feel it will be, and it is because of the unsung talents of julio jones.  matt ryan, tony gonzalez, and roddy white are salivooling over the prospect of Turner destroying nickel defenses.   yes the saints and bucs are looking forward to the start of the season with optimism, but this falcon team is loaded.

which brings us to the RAMS:  the division is there for the taking.  tavaris jackson is no seneca wallace in seattle.  alex smith is a poor man's schmegma beauregard in san fran, kevin kolb is a good player in arizona but with these qbs as the competition, slingin sammy bradford will bloom under josh macdaniels spread offense.   and the rams are improving on defense.  playoff bound ram team should provide at least a shot at a spoiler roll for st louis.  boo-ya.

I just typed a reply and apparently it was so bad that the internet ghost in the machine made it simply vanish.

Tony Gonzalez sure like Julio Jones. All I have to say is it's good thing football players wear helmets because Jones has a face that looks like something from another planet--and maybe he is, given how talented they say he is....

The great thing about the NFL is that just when you think there's a clear front runner, someone else sneaks in and steals the whole thing.
Maybe all this Philly love will take some pressure off the Patriots.

The Lions aren't there yet... eight wins would be a minor miracle. We'll have to see if the curse of Brett Favre still affects the Vikes.

How often in Lovie Smith's tenure have the Bears put up back-to-back winning seasons?

The NFC South is probably a better division than the Norse. The Saints won 11 games last year with an underperforming defense and no running back. I'd take them over Atlanta with Ingram in the backfield.
No way Josh Freeman repeats a 5+ to 1 TD/INT ratio.

Does the NFC still have a division west of the Mississippi, or has it been demoted to the Mountain West or WAC conferences, as it probably doesn't have the talent for the Pac-10.

More than any of the previous disappointments during Andy Reid's tenure, this is the year that will either prove Eagles fans wrong in their belief that their team will never win the big one, or suckerpunch them so hard in the gut that they lose what hopes they had of ever seeing their team win it all.

Being an Eagles fan, I'm doing ab-crunches, and will stick to my annual, Just beat Dallas twice, finish ahead of them in the standings, and beat them a third time if they meet in the playoffs. No real believer in what's probably the most talented Eagles team ever, I'm good with a 2-14 record, so long as the above condition is met.

Only two other coaches, from the beginnings of their careers, have won more games with the teams they first coached. Reid has a shot of passing both of them, but not this season, and no chance he'll be around for next season if they don't win the Super Bowl.

jane: great point about surprises, but i believe in the teams that knock for awhile too.
Idoj: the lions are in a brutal division, just like the pack and the bears!

fj- I know Julio Jones got banged up @ Bama . but I didn't know he suffered facial injuries

Rams have a legit shot in the NFCW.

I hear the Bears have OL issues. Not buying the the McNabb rebirth in Minn.

168-0 you read it here first. It's all over Detroit sports babble radio so it must be so. Loins have arrived.

And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him Bill or Geroge or anything but Ndmhdknptrysckng.

F the Eagles! Dallas goes 2-0 against them this year with Garrett running the show, a much improved O-line, and a healthy Romo! The Giants are the ones who are sliding in the NFC East!

Falcons could be good, but we think that most years! The ONE for sure in Atlanta is that if healthy Roddy will be a top 3-5 reciever!

I like the Rams this year! Sims-Walker cant hurt Bradford's game and Jackson should still have some legs left under him!

Finally, like FJ mentioned, all this Eagles talk is taking the pressure off a healthy Brady and co!

Peace

Correction: The Saints defense last year didn't underperform. It finished in seventh in points allowed, and fourth in yards allowed.

Once again anything is possible.
1. The Eagles will only win if there is a concerted effort on the part of Goodell who, it turns out from Vick himself, already made a concerted effort to steer him to Philly and away from Buffalo and Cincinnnati. But all-star teams don't always win. See Miami Heat. You're right about the division declining though... Dallas and NY look like toast to me. Let's see if the Skins' impressive showing in the first week develops into a midseason machine. But still Philly in the division one would think.
2. The collapse of Miami took the 'best division' title out of the AFCE, but it won't end up in the NFCN because I still think that the Pack will stumble a bit, the Vikings will be awful again, and the Lions will fold under pressure should they threaten to contend. I'm also starting to think that the Bears, about whom I've said many good things, are in trouble. Their OL stinks.
3. Atlanta can't take the next step if the Eagles win the SB, can they? I think they'll do ok but they continue to bore me whereas NO looks a lot more motivated. I'll get to see something about TB tonight against the Patriots.
4. The division is indeed there for the taking, and the Rams are as likely as anyone else to take it. Likelier maybe... we'll see about the Cards. They didn't impress me against Oakland.
