Think the NFL isn't in trouble? Think the hype and soft-pedaling by their media outlets is the truth? Think their pandering to players has solved a problem?
I didn't have much of a gauge myself until last night as I watched the awful Miami Dolphins put in about a quarter's worth of work in Carolina. It wasn't the awful product on the field, watching a game in which yet another team packed it in at midseason, that gave me the idea.
It was a ...Read Full Post »

Well, well... an eventful week in the football part of football, most of it full of incredible lowlights. We had two touchdownbacks, crucial giveaways... amazing stuff. We had some pretender unmaskings. We crowned the worst team in football... and despite their being the only winless team left, it wasn't the Browns.
How bad were things? Exactly three teams looked impressive. They were:
1. New England --- dissected what once was the 'best defense in the leag...Read Full Post »

Is there ANY team (as a whole) that is WORSE than the Browns? Front office a mess. Owner a mess. Coach and Analytics not on the same page. Can't win a game. Can't access talent. No franchise QB since returning in 1999. Not much of a defense or offense. Drop balls. No actual WR's on the team. Didnt pick SOOO many in the draft over the years, we look like fools! Watson could have been Rookie of the Year. Philly QB was not even ra...Read Full Post »

NHL reason is young but there are some players off to slow starts. Curious question. Any one, two or three stand out as really slow getting out of the gate this years.
Write-in candidates accepted but below are a few examples I found that have been somewhat surprising thus far.
Players by goals / assists / +/-
Sid 5 / 8 / -12
Kane 5 / 9 / 0
Brett Burns 0 / 7 / -8
Jack Eichel 4 / 10 / -4
Patrik Laine 7 / 2 / -1...Read Full Post »

This quickie stuff is fun. More efficient too. And all the NFL deserves. Invite Kappy for a conference? That's like the Czar making Leon Trotsky his press secretary. The lesson? Never save anything on your cell phone? The irony? Kappy (or his lawyer) says no? This is football?

For years I thought of Vin Scully only as the announcer for the NBA team I disliked most, and Mark Cuban as a flamboyant jerk. I may have to think about that.
You've probably read something by now about Scully vocally abandoning the NFL and Cuban's comments regarding NFL/NBA 'slavery' drivel. Here's hoping about 100 other owners start drawing lines. One thing you probably haven't seen is this blithering screed against them in the NYDN:

With New England on a bye it seemed play quality leaguewide dipped to about 50% of the norm, which wasn't good to start with. No Pitt didn't help. Heck, no Bears didn't help. Teams that actually showed up won with disturbing frequency. A number of games seemed to feature two teams that didn't show up. But it's not like it wasn't informative, even if much of it was hard to watch for long. An awful lot of receivers dropped an awful lot of easy passes. With gloves. Uncovered. Makes y...Read Full Post »

Things are obviously going pretty well for Verlander right now. World Series win, marriage to a woman who isn't exactly dog meat in the looks department.
But here's why it's hats off to him.
When he agreed to the Houston trade, he had 3 x 28 mil left on his contract with a 4th year vesting option at 22 mil if he finished in the top 5 in Cy Young voting in 2019.
With the trade coming near the end of the season, Houston was on the hook for roughly 5.5 mil of the 28 in...
