Things looked far from certain for the Champs in weeks leading up to the start of free agency. They had too many contracts expiring, especially on defense, to assume the same group or even something resembling it would return. Some big names were involved.
Now two days in, uncertainties continue but they appear to have anticipated any carnage to this point. The news:
Colt TE Dwayne Allen was acquired for a 6th-round pick.
Bills DB Stephon Gilmore was obtained via free agency.
Panther DE Kony Ealy (plus a 3rd-round pick) was procured for NE's 2nd-round pick.
Saints WR Brandin Cooks (plus a 4th-rounder) was acquired for NE's 1st round pick plus a 3rd rounder.
So with everyone wondering about Garoppolo (who now asserts that his goodbye tweet was the result of a hack) and assuming that, with the arrival of Gilmore, Malcolm Butler would be traded for Cooks, both remain (so far) with the Patriots.
They also re-signed DT Alan Branch and S Duron Harmon. LB Hightower remains a FA, but supposedly with the 'lines open' to Foxboro. As for Butler, he has yet to sign his tender but likely will do so. Speculation is that he may still be traded. TE Bennett has gone to GB. DE Sheard is in Indy. DB Logan Ryan is in Tennessee. They threw good money at Gilmore but should still be way under the cap.
So the team that has spent many offseasons quietly locking up veterans has instead made something of a splash in its first two days. The wheels are turning in Foxboro it seems now.
