Something Fishy as Usual

Posted by Radatz on January 3, 2018 at 12:35 AM

Just a fast junk blog here before a thought gets snowed under.

Remember a few years back when teams were losing guys because of a 'torn bicep'? Well, this year's injury-du-jour seems to be either "Achilles" or "calf". What's up? An Achilles rupture used to be the dreaded injury that happened to some pro athlete (or somebody you know) about once every decade. Now we see guys go down almost every week with that or a lesser variation. And "calf"? Patriots have had Van Noy on the sidelines for weeks. Brown in Pittsburgh has an equally undefined calf injury that has Squealer fans... well... squealing.

What is it? Some new piece of equipment everybody's using? Some new technique? Some new PED? A big calf-strengthening fad? Teams guzzling fluoroquinalone antibiotics?

Fishy fishy fishy.

Speaking of which. Are "Bass Fishing" shows catching up to the NFL in TV ratings yet?

Achilles is a bad one but you're correct in your observation that it has become increasingly more prevalent. Who knows with modern athletes in football and baseball? At least hockey player still pick their ears up off the ice, skate it back to the locker room, get it stitched back one on only miss a shift or two. Nothing fishy about real men.

there's no doubt hockey players earn it more than any other pro athletes

its code for "concussion". no way antonio brown has had a clear headed moment since that hit to the head in the end zone

Speaking of hockey players, Bergeron got his arm caught on an open bench door during the game and it looked bad. Out on his next shift.

How bout the Bruins? Cassidy has put together a super first line and 3 effective other lines out of kids and old guys, and a defense out of the same that's dominating shots-on-goal stats.

Dr. David Chao explains it like this -" As players get bigger, faster and stronger, the size of the Achilles tendon (or ACL) does not increase. The Achilles of the 227-pound player is not proportionately thicker, wider or stronger than that of a 150-pound office worker.". So therefore there are more injuries.

Chao often analyzes / speculates about athletic injuries for the public on social media platforms.
He is also the team doctor for the Chargers and was very helpful in analyzing Shazier"s injuries when details weren't all that plentiful to the public. He is not a hack and provides a lot of good info .

interesting. i was under the impression that tendons and stuff thickened and got stronger if you worked em out right. that makes a lot more sense then that roidos are snapping them
