World Cup

Almost a great run by the US Womens Soccer team. Its just my opinion, but I'm thinking that the collars got a little tight after Japan scored that winning goal with less than 4 minutes to play. 1 for 4 on penalty kicks just does not get it done. Congrats to the Japaneese ladies for their epic win. Thing I liked the most was the complete lack of diving by either squad. The one thing that I am not looking forward to is the media telling us  how this soccer game helped heal a nation. Too bad that soccer now gets relegated to the back burners, at least in this country, for the next 4 yrs.

It was a good game as a Soccer fan. Lots of drama on the edge of your seat stuff. Shootout though was poor, never seen so many misses/saves before.

Nice to see Japan have something to cheer for and be proud of after what they went through in March.

Good game, very entertaining

My thoughts on today's sports; Mickelson has an errant driver and can't putt

I think I actually like the women's game better than the men b/c the sport is not about trying to dupe the ref into giving a penalty kick or a red card so that you win the game (unless of course, you're Brazil).

Sorry, soccer doesn't do it for me though, shootouts are a stupid way to end a hard fought contest like this. Play 10 minute golden goal, removing one team member every 10 minutes until a goal is scored.

That sounds like a plan

Congrats to Japan on a great win. It might not heal the country, but it obviously meant a lot to them, and the ladies performed admirably under what must have been pretty intense pressure.

Very disappointing penalty kicks for the U.S.... not as bad as Brazil blew it at the Copa though!!

Not sure what the fuss about a penalty shootout is, especially if the solution is to 'take one player off every 10 minutes'... I've seen things like this proposed before,, like 3 on 3 OT, so we can avoid the 'travesty' that is the shootout. While not the best way to end a game (I prefer full strength OT' for however long it takes...), a 3 on 3 NHL game or a 5 on 5 soccer OT would be just as much a farce. It still excludes teammates and both do little to uphold the integrity of the game, imo at least.

I also don't have much problem with shootouts in soccer, since that is tradition and the way the game has been played. Hockey is a little different (here in N.A. at least) in that it has been wedged where it really doesn't belong once the NHL adopted it. Still better than ties though, the NHL has me sold, I guess.

ANYWAYS, congrats to both teams for a great final and for brining alot of attention to their sport and making people stand up and pay attention.

Disagree, LSOK. Bring back the tie. At least it was a legit point. OTL just invites the idiocy of the unmentioned OTW which created a league with 8 losing teams and 22 'winning' teams this past season. For all the great points of hockey vis a vis the other majors, that's a black eye.

I would rather keep the shootout, but go with a straight up 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss system.

Screw the extra points and OTL column etc.

I was vehemently against the idea of shootouts when it was introduced, as I think of myself as a bit of a hockey purist... but it HAS grown on me, and I do like seeing a resolution to the game. That said, a hard fought tie isn't any less entertaining and I wouldn't be against returning to that system.
