NHL Slow Starts

Posted by Galfur on November 8, 2017 at 6:35 PM

NHL reason is young but there are some players off to slow starts. Curious question. Any one, two or three stand out as really slow getting out of the gate this years.

Write-in candidates accepted but below are a few examples I found that have been somewhat surprising thus far.

Players by goals / assists / +/-

Sid 5 / 8 / -12

Kane 5 / 9 / 0

Brett Burns 0 / 7 / -8

Jack Eichel 4 / 10 / -4

Patrik Laine 7 / 2 / -1

Leon Draisaitl 4 / 7 / 5

Erik Karlsson 1 / 12 / -1

Niklas Backstrom 3 / 9 / -1

Max Pacioretty 6 / 4 / -4

Patrice Bergeron 2 /  6 / 2

Goaltenders by wins / GAA / SV%

Carey Price 3 / 3.77 / .877

Cam Talbot 5 / 2.99 / .909

Tukka Rask 3 / 2.73 / .903

Devan Dubnyk 4 / 3.03 / .907

From my POV, Sid and Carey Price really stand out as unexpectedly off pace. Pacioretty had an awful start but has picked up a few goals in the past week or so. Bergeron seems like another slow start.

On the flip side, for fast starters, check out Kessel, Stamkos, Blake Wheeler, Brayden Schenn, Jacob Voracek, Jaden Schwartz, Evander Kane and Dustin Brown (cooling as of late),

Corey Crawford and Jonathan Quick started real hot among the tenders.

Bergeron is working into an up-tempo new style. Boston's missing pieces, but the kids are fun to watch so far. Weird OT loss to Kings, 3-2 loss to the Caps... about where they are. That's promising. If Cass improves them they'll be fun.

Downside: Krejci (my 'slow start' addition) is hurt again. He's toast. Chara looks good when he moves. One game he does, the next he doesn't. Rask keeps getting the teflon treatment from the media around here but it's getting clear Khudobin has been more consistent.

Sedin about washed up? How many years left on his contract? Don't get too excited about Price coming (unless you know more than you're sayin).

Up tempo could be a difficult adjustment for some of the vets., Rad. But if the youth is there, go for it.

Sean Coutier - 12 games, 10 goals, 9 assists and a +14.

I don't think anyone expected those numbers from him. Hot start.

Not sure why the Flyers didn't "want " Schenn and traded him to STL. He was fifth overall pick by LAK in 2009 before being traded to Philly in the Richards deal.

I don't know if it belongs in 'slow starts' or 'bad finishes' but the Bruins are compiling a record number of last minute/second gags of hard-earned wins over good teams that didn't happen.
